After six months and more than 20,000 kilometers, the GWM Ora 5 Hybrid faces one of the toughest challenges for any new car: disappearing the “new car effect.” Autofácil conducted this extended test to see what happens when a vehicle accumulates drivers, miles, and real-world situations instead of just highway cruising.
The choice of the Chinese manufacturer’s model was deliberate. European markets are seeing more Chinese vehicles, but there is still a question about how they age after thousands of kilometers. The Ora 5 sits in the C-SUV segment, a vital market area measuring about 4.45 meters. It offers combustion and electric options, but the Hybrid version—around 220 CV and under 30,000 euros—compares directly with popular compact SUVs.
Initial impressions after 2,500 kilometers are mostly positive. Juan Carlos Payo rated the car 8 out of 10 after the first 1,250 km, citing comfort and ride smoothness as the main virtues. A 1,000-kilometer trip reinforced this feeling; the car feels designed for long distances without causing fatigue. The seats are a highlight, offering multiple adjustments and ventilation—a feature drivers appreciate during summer months.
Consumption is currently under observation. During the first long trip, it reached about 6.5 liters per 100 km. By the 2,500-kilometer mark, mixing urban and interurban driving brought the figure down to approximately 5.7 liters per 100 km, closer to the official 5.1 l/100 km rating. The car has handled the transition from showroom to daily commuter well.

One small detail stands out, however. The turn signal’s acoustic warning is too subtle for some drivers to notice. This is the type of issue that usually only appears after living with a vehicle for a long time.
Testing the Limits
Software updates will be a major focus. The test aims to see if GWM introduces fixes or modifies functions remotely over the next six months, meaning the car at the end might not be identical to the one at the start. The vehicle will also change hands among regular users, not just professional testers, to see if initial impressions hold up under normal ownership conditions.
As the car passes 20,000 kilometers, the focus shifts to durability, maintenance, and post-sale service. The goal is to determine if the Ora 5 Hybrid maintains its performance and reliability as it ages.
Now arrives the really important part: surpassing the 20,000 kilometers and checking how the car responds to the passage of time. Malfunctions, wear and tear, maintenance, technology, consumption, and after-sales service will be some of the aspects we will analyze during the next six months.
