Lexus seeks to push its lineup further into the high-performance segment. Toyota’s premium arm is reportedly developing a sportier interpretation of the Lexus RX Morizo RR, a model positioned to challenge the hierarchy of the most potent SUVs available. The new SUV is slated for a 2028 release, with competitors including the BMW X5 M and Audi RS Q8 firmly on the radar. The project remains in the development phase, but a prototype has been photographed parked, exposing several features that distinguish it from the conventional RX.
Exterior modifications spotted on prototype
Spy photos depict an exterior that is notably more aggressive than the standard RX. Key visual distinctions include red Brembo brake calipers and perforated discs, alongside widened wheel arches and tracks. New air intakes are integrated into the lower grille area. The wheels are wrapped in specialized Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tires, with measurements of 265/40 ZR21 at the front and 295/35 R21 at the rear. The rear also features side exhausts, though some bumper protections suggest the car is still in the finalization stages. These modifications signal a clear departure from the utilitarian image of the standard RX.

Powertrain details and heritage
Under the hood, the most significant change lies. The automaker is developing a hybrid propulsion system capable of exceeding 600 horsepower. The core is a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, internally designated as G20E. This unit is designed to meet Euro 7 emissions standards and produces up to 400 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque on its own. This power is augmented by electric motors on both axles, creating an all-wheel-drive system. The combination aims to deliver sports car performance with the daily usability associated with the RX name.
The ‘Morizo RR’ designation has been used previously by Lexus. It was applied to the LBX Morizo RR, a sporty version of the urban SUV that utilizes the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine found in the Toyota GR Yaris. That model produces 304 horsepower. The upcoming RX represents a massive jump in power while maintaining the brand’s focus on performance. The brand seems prepared to recover that spirit, though adapted to a new era in which electrification will play a prominent role. Historically, the automaker relied on the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine seen in the IS F, GS F, and RC F. The IS F, launched in 2007, initially offered 423 horsepower and a top speed of 270 km/h. Later iterations like the GS F and RC F increased this to 477 horsepower. The RX Morizo RR appears to be the latest step in that lineage.

The move to electrify a performance SUV like the RX marks a strategic pivot for the automaker. While traditional enthusiasts often prefer the linear weight distribution of a sedan, SUVs currently command the largest share of the luxury market. Bridging this gap requires sophisticated engineering to ensure the heavy platform does not negate the benefits of advanced hybrid torque vectoring.
The official release date is set for 2028, which is still a ways off. If these developments are confirmed, consumers will have to wait a few more years to see the final product. The RX Morizo RR promises to challenge the dominance of existing performance SUVs, offering a hybrid alternative to the German rivals.
